For the first time in recent club history, Commodore Paul Follansbee declared we should have June practice races to dust off our skills.
Great Idea!
The first practice race was held Tuesday, June 8th.
This was a great opportunity for sailing club member Jerry Guyot to try out his new MC Scow.
As Jerry vividly recalls the challenging race:
T
he winds were blowing a steady 10 knots out of the Northwest with just a slight chop. Jerry had a fantastic start and was ahead at the first mark. He increased his lead between the first and second mark and after rounding the third mark was well ahead of the rest of the boats! He easily glided through the finish line in first place.
Nice going Jerry!
Two sailors braved the sun, wind and 65 degree temperature for the June 15th race. Winds were from the NW at 8-12 knots with 15 knot gusts. After marks were set by the Committee Boat, Jerry Guyot and Sandy Trend, in her Sunfish, were off to a fast start heading north to the first buoy. Jerry and Sandy swapped the lead several times while maneuvering the course. Both agreed it was great to have steady winds to brush up on old skills and work on new ones before the summer season starts June 29th. And who was that wind surfer that screeched by us on the second leg?? Everyone met at the Olde Mill after the race to discuss race results and have some well deserved dinner.
